Welcome to the anonymous FTP service of the Instituto Superior Tecnico. Before you go on using our archive, I'd like to give you some hints concerning FTP in general and this archive in particular. Contents of this file: 0. Software you might need to ftp and then unpack files 1. Things you should DO when ftp'ing to this site 2. Things you sould NOT DO when ftp'ing to this site 3. Special features of this ftp server 4. Contents of the archive -------------------------------------------------------------------------- 0. To retrieve files, you need the following programs (and know how to use them): a) 'ftp' (hmm... you ARE reading this already, so I suppose you've got ftp). b) 16-bit compress/uncompress in order to be able to uncompres ending with ".Z". c) 'gzip' (GNU zip) in order to be able to uncompress files ending with ".gz", or sometimes ending with ".z" (gzip extension in older versions). Sources for gzip are in the pub/gnu directory. d) 'tar' or 'gtar' (GNU tar) for files containing the string ".tar" in their name. e) 'sh' (or compatible shell) for ".shar" files. f) 'cat' (and output re-direction) for ".split.??" files (or *aa* through *az*) g) For some strangely packed files you may need atob/btoa 1. DO's a) When asked for the ftp password, give your login@domainname. b) Make sure your own system hasn't got the stuff you want to get. b1)Try to get the stuff you want from somewhere near you. So would you *please* try and fetch the stuff you want from one of those other famous ftp sites ... preferrably inside your own country or site ... THANKS !!! c) Avoid ftp'ing during local working hours - that is from 08:00h to 18:00 local time. 2. DON'T's Don't ... a) forget to set binary mode where appropriate (especially with .Z and .tar and .gz files) b) send a lot of stuff unless it's requested. 3. Special features a) '(un)compress', '(un)gzip and 'tar' on the fly is supported. This depends on the filename that you specify when using a RETREIVE command (e.g. GET): True Filename Specified Filename Action performed before transmission ------------- ------------------ ------------------------------------ .Z uncompress .gz ungzip .Z compress (*) .gz gzip (*) .tar tar (*) .tar.Z tar and compress (*) .tar.gz tar and gzip (*) (*) don't forget to switch to 'bin' mode Examples: If you see a file "Index" and you issue "GET Index.gz", you will get the file in gzip'ped format. If you see a directory "something" and you issue "GET something.tar.Z", you will get a compressed tar archive of that directory. (WARNING: Have a look of the size before doing that ...) 4. Contents of this archive are in: pub/ls-lR[.gz] this is a [gzip'ed] version of the output of an 'ls -lR' command ('ls -lR' on SysV machines, yes...).
